The history of American literature is intertwined with the history of America itself. The Native American Period, before the colonization, was characterized by oral traditions of songs and stories, creation myths, totems, and archetypes of trickster and conjurer. There was a focus on the natural world as sacred and the importance of land and place. The Iroquois Confederation and The Iroquois Constitution provided a model for the future government.
