The University of Oxford, also known as Oxford University or simply Oxford, is a collegiate research university located in Oxford, England. It is considered the oldest university in the English-speaking world, with evidence of teaching dating back to at least 1096. It is also the world's second-oldest university in continuous operation. The university grew rapidly from 1167 onwards, particularly after English students were banned from attending the University of Paris by Henry II. Following disputes between students and townsfolk in 1209, some academics moved to Cambridge and established the University of Cambridge. The University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge are often collectively referred to as "Oxbridge."
