John William Strutt was born in London in 1797 to the second Baron Rayleigh of Terling Place. He had siblings Clara, Richard, Charles, and Edward. He studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, under the coaching of Edward Routh. In 1864, he was awarded Smith's Prize at Cambridge University.
